Swim Diapers

Something else I was inspired to make is swim diapers. The disposable diapers are getting pretty expensive and I'd like to take the kids to the pool more often, but can't afford to keep buying the Little Swimmers.

I got the pattern from SewMammaSew.com and it's super easy to print and make.

I got this cute printed swim material from Hancock Fabric. I tried to go to Joann first but they only had a very limited selection of solid colors. The next layer I used was PUL fabric. Joann carries it in their Babyville section. It's the same stuff you use on the outside of some of the cloth envelope diapers. The innermost layer is just a swim suit lining, although I am not impressed at all with using it. Honestly it's really hard to use. It is impossibly stretchy and trying to line it up with the piece of PUL you already cut out is extremely difficult. I would have used athletic mesh for this, however, the only kind they had was camo. Another option for the inner lining would be crushed panne or suede cloth fabrics. Basically anything that is going to wick the moisture away. The edging is also from Babyville - Fold over elastic or FOE. This stuff is really great because it has a ridge along the middle that makes it nice and easy to fold, as the name suggests.

The pattern mentioned before comes in all sizes, so you should easily be able to find the right size for your little bums! I should mention that there is a slight learning curve with the use of the FOE. You really have to stretch it out while you're sewing and use a wide zigzag stitch. You have to be careful though because the swim suit material is also stretchy and you dont want to stretch that while you're pulling the elastic. It really takes 2 hands.

One thing to remember is that swim diapers are not meant to be absorbent. They are simply used to contain messes of the solid persuasion.
